The fun is in the hunt.
It’s a phrase you hear often in this hobby. Anyone can run through an online shop and click ‘Add to Cart’. Anyone can pre-order the latest upcoming releases and sit comfortably waiting for the days to tick away. Finding those rare, out-of-production gems at the right price though - that takes time, dedication, and work. It means that, while you’re waiting for your food, you’re scrolling through hundreds of listings, filtered by the newest at the top, looking to snatch that special model before anybody else can get their hands on it. It means that, while waiting in line at the register and the auction you’ve had your whole week planned around is coming down to its final seconds, you’re counting them down in your head while frantically trying to manage completing your errand, interacting with the people around you, and sniping your competitors. It means that, one slip, one brief mental lapse, and there goes the holy grail which, by the way, you won’t find another for the next couple years.
You win some and you lose some, but that’s what makes it ultimately rewarding. Shout-out to those out there also doing the same. You guys are the real collectors, the ones who don’t just buy what’s hot and new, the ones who know the difference between a piece and a masterpiece.
These are the most memorable eighteenth-scale treasures I managed to dig up in 2018. The models shown were released in years past, so I did not include them in the other list. You wouldn’t bother ranking a Miura to a Huracan; therefore, you just can’t compare a grail find to a contemporary piece that every other collector owns.
